Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic has pulled out of the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers for Croatia after he picked up an injury at the weekend.

Mateo Kovacic inflamed an Achilles tendon in his right leg during the game between Chelsea and Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea and Sheffield United shared a four-goal thriller as the Blades came from two goals down to play a 2-2 draw with their opponents.

Tammy Abraham scored two goals for Chelsea in the first half to give the Blues a 2-0 lead at the halftime interval.

Sheffield United came back to score two goals in the second half.

Callum Robinson pulled one back for Sheffield United at the start of the second half before Kurt Zouma put through his own net on the stroke of full-time to give the Blades an unlikely point.

Mateo Kovacic played during the Sheffield United game and the injury sustained means that he will miss the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The 25-year-old has been replaced by Mijo Caktas in the Croatian squad.

Mateo Kovacic joins Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante on the sidelines.

Kante has been struggling to shake off an ankle injury since the start of the season.

He didn’t feature for Chelsea during the Sheffield United game.
