Spanish La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have announced the signing of Mexican international midfielder Hector Herrera from Portuguese Super League club on a free transfer.

The official announcement was made on Wednesday evening via the various social media handles of Atletico Madrid.

It was also revealed that the Mexican midfielder will be unveiled as an Atletico Madrid player at the new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Thursday.

Hector Herrera joins Atletico Madrid on a free transfer after his FC Porto contract expired at the end of last month.

The 29-year-old was previously linked with a free transfer move to Premier League giants Arsenal as well as the Italian Serie A duo of AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Hector Herrera scored 35 goals and also added 35 assists in 245 appearances as an FC Porto player.

He was named the 2014/15 Player of the Year at FC Porto and also won the Portuguese top flight title with the club last season.

Hector Herrera has missed out of the 2019 Gold Cup tournament this summer in a bid to sort out his future.

The Mexican international was previously part of the squads of the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup games.

He has penned a three year deal at Atletico Madrid until the end of the 2021/22 season.
