English Premier League title holders, Liverpool might have found a defender to sign ahead of the January winter transfer window after claims that they are in contact with Schalke defender Malick Thiaw.
The Reds team were hit by a number of injuries which made manager Jurgen Klopp short if options at the back. High flying defender Virgil Van Dijk has been ruled out of the season after a tackle on him by Everton goalkeeper on the Merseyside derby.
Fabinho and Joel Matip are also struggling with fitness, a development that leaves the Merseyside outfit in the hand is teenage defender Rhys Williams.
This calls for a need to sign a cover in the January transfer window and the Reds are understood to be in talks with Malick Thiaw after being linked with him last year and making an attempt that failed eventually.

The interest from Liverpool is still firm and will ensure they bring him to Anfield now that they have high need of a cover for the Dutch defender with SportBILD reporting that ‘Liverpool maintain regular contact’ with the defender through their scouts.
A report by Sport Witness confirmed Liverpool’s contact with the player and added that “There is no mention of an impending Liverpool bid or even a hint that the Reds want to make a move for him, just that they are keeping in touch and presumably keeping an eye on him.”
Malick Thiaw has a running contract with the German side until 2024 but there are chances he will not see out the contract if Liverpool make their interest serious.
However, Liverpool youngster Rhys Williams has been very impressive for Liverpool. The Reds might end up not bringing a new defender in the January transfer window because of the presence of the young defender.
Other players linked with a move to Liverpool are Dayot Upamecano and Ben Whites from RB Leipzig and Brighton respectively
