Kai Havertz, 21, enjoyed a breakthrough season at Bayer Leverkusen in the last campaign and Manchester United were said to have enquired about him.

Manchester United were quoted €100m for Kai Havertz and they baulked at the fee paving the way for Premier League rivals Chelsea to swoop for him.

Chelsea made their biggest signing of thr summer with Kai Havertz. Some media outlets said the Blues agreed to pay as much as £89m for him, while others said the fee is £72m.

Kai Havertz is the Blues’ club record signing ahead of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

He scored his first goals for the West Londoners during the Carabao Cup third round meeting with Championship side Barnsley.

Havertz netted a hattrick as Chelsea thrashed Barnsley 6-0 at home at the third round stage of the competition.
