English Premier League leaders Everton were strongly interested in Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero but the Argentine international was unable to join the Toffees as the move was blocked by his club.

His partner took to social media to rant about the club’s decision to stop the player from leaving Manchester United for Everton.

According to journalist IndyKaila, Manchester United blocked the transfer because they didn’t want to strengthen a direct rival.

The Red Devils see Everton as a top contender for the top four places in the Premier League this season.

Everton are the current Premier League leaders after a run of four victories from four matches.

The Toffees have won all their seven games in all competitions at the start of this season.

Everton have had a very good start to the season, while Manchester United have endured a contrasting start.

The Red Devils have won just once from three games in the Premier League and are in the bottom five on the league table.

Sergio Romero wanted to leave the club this summer after becoming third choice upon the return of Dean Henderson from a two-year loan spell with Sheffield United.

The Argentine international has spent five years at Old Trafford.
