Chelsea have increased the African contingent on their payroll following the capture of Senegalese international shot stopper Edouard Mendy.

The 28-year-old becomes the eighth signing of the summer for Chelsea after the announcement was made on Thursday.

Edouard Mendy signs for the Blues from French team Rennes after the two clubs reached an agreement of £22m in transfer fees for his services.

He has signed a five-year contract until the summer of 2025.

Edouard Mendy is now expected to become the first choice goalkeeper ahead of the troubled Kepa Arrizabalaga who has struggled for form and confidence for the better part of the last one year.

The Senegalese goalkeeper could make his first appearance with the club at the weekend as Chelsea travel to the Midlands to take on Premier League newcomers West Bromwich Albion.

Chelsea had previously signed free agents Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr in this transfer window.

Other signings include Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

With the signing of the aforementioned Mendy, Chelsea could send Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan as per the latest reports in the media.

Kepa Arrizabalaga became the most expensive goalkeeper in world football when Chelsea activated his £71m release clause at La Liga club Athletic Bilbao two years ago.

His loss of confidence has seen him produce howlers consistently.
