A big transfer mistake from Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona might give Arsenal the boost needed to sign top target Houssem Aouar from Lyon this summer according to journalist Duncan Castles.

He told Transfer Window podcast that Lyon are in a poor financial state and that the Champions League semi-finalists need to sell one of their best players to raise money.

Barcelona had plans to sign Dutch forward Memphis Depay from Lyon but they have not been able to raise the funds required for the transfer of the ex-Manchester United attacker.

Lyon want at least €30m for Dutch international Depay who’s keen to work with Ronald Koeman again at Barcelona.

Koeman and Depay had a very good relationship when the former was the Dutch national team manager.

The unlikely Memphis Depay transfer to Barcelona has paved the way for Arsenal to intensify their efforts to sign Houssem Aouar whom Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas described as the best player at the club.

With Lyon facing a difficult time financially, the French giants would reluctantly lower their €60m asking price for Houssem Aouar.

Lyon skipper Houssem Aouar has been the subject of interest from clubs like Juventus, Arsenal and Real Madrid.
