Manchester United have been the dominant club in the English Premier League (EPL) era though it must be pointed out that they are yet to win the competition in seven years. The last win came during the 2012/13 season when legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson was at the club.

The last Premier League title at Manchester United coincided with the final season under Sir Alex Ferguson who retired as a manager in 2013 before moving upstairs as a director on the club’s board.

Manchester United won 13 Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson to take them above arch rivals, Liverpool, as the most successful club in English league football. The Red Devils now have 20 league titles, while Liverpool is stuck on 18 league titles though that’s expected to increase to 19 in a matter of weeks after the compulsory Coronavirus break.

1. Ryan Giggs

The former Manchester United skipper won 8 Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford. Just like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, Gary Neville spent all his football career at Old Trafford.

Arsenal could lose the services of Brazilian defender David Luiz after the recent revelation that the player signed for just a season. He was an £8m acquisition from London rivals Chelsea last summer.

David Luiz became surplus to requirements when Blues legend Frank Lampard was named the manager in 2019 and the centre back had to leave Stamford Bridge for a new adventure rather than sit on the sidelines at Chelsea. Various media outlets reported on Wednesday that the Brazilian international centre back signed a one-year contract plus the option of an additional year but the Gunners have not taken that ‘extra year’ option until now. The option will expire at the end of next month meaning that the player will become a free agent.

David Luiz is in the latter part of his football career at the age of 33 and this factor could be a major decider on the part of the Arsenal bosses especially with young defender William Saliba expected to return to the club for next season at the end of his loan at Saint Etienne. Arsenal signed Frenchman Saliba from Saint Etienne in a £25m deal before he was loaned back to the French Ligue 1 for the current campaign.

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has been able to build his reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in world football. He was a relatively unknown quantity at Leicester City before his massive contribution to the miracle of the 2015/16 Premier League campaign.

Kante was a major act alongside Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez as Leicester City overcame title-winning odds of 5000/1 to pull off a league title win. The Frenchman formed a potent midfield partnership with Danny Drinkwater who’s also a Chelsea player though he is presently at fellow Premier League side Aston Villa whom he joined on loan in January.

Apart from his quality, N’Golo Kante has also been very consistent until this season. He has rarely been injured, whether it was at Leicester City or at Chelsea who signed him shortly after his Leicester City heroics in 2016. The 2019/20 season has been a disappointing one for Kante in comparison to the four seasons before it.

One of the biggest news on the transfer scene in the last few hours is the potential collapse of the ‘Timo Werner to Liverpool’ transfer.  Several popular media outlets have reported that Premier League heavyweights Liverpool are not ready to pay the money quoted by his club for the transfer thus leading to the question if the petite forward is really worth the €60m release clause in his contract at German Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

Timo Werner has been performing well for RB Leipzig for some years and the German international is only 24 but the Reds are still not convinced about his price tag. Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo is almost helpless as his Manchester United dream is set to come to an end after some months. The former Super Eagles star is on the verge of returning to parent club Shanghai Shenshua in the Chinese Super League as his loan deal at the Theatre of Dreams ends in a matter of days.

Odion Ighalo has been able to fulfil a lifelong dream of playing for Manchester United at the age of 30 and he has also done well more than expected with a return of four goals in just three starts. Age is however not on his side which is the main reason behind Manchester United’s reluctance to sign him on a permanent deal. With Bayern Munich reluctant to sign Coutinho permanently, the player has to find a new club this summer and Arsenal have emerged as a potential destination. Barcelona are prepared to cut their losses on the player by selling him for a fee much lower than what they paid Liverpool for his services.

His Chinese club wants him back as they prepare for the resumption of the Super League.
