Top Three Potential Arsenal Centre Back Signing For This Summer

Amuda Segun

Published

on

The centre back has been a problematic department for Arsenal over the last two decades especially since the Invincibles who masterminded an unbeaten run for the club throughout the course of the 2003/04 season.

That unbeaten season some 16 years ago was the last time Arsenal had the best defensive record in the division and it culminated in their 13th and final league title till date. The Gunners have not been able to produce a defence that could fire them to another league title.

Arsenal have had some good centre back partnerships since the Invincibles but they have not been good enough to lead the club to another title. The Invincibles had Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure at the heart of the defence.

Both Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure were instrumental to the defensive solidity which served as the platform for a mindblowing season during the 2003/04 campaign. The state of Arsenal’s defence deteriorated over the past few years but that has eased up with the arrival of former player Mikel Arteta who was named the permanent Gunners boss in December 2019.

Arteta and Arsenal had one of the best defences in the division from the time he took over the affairs of the first team until when the current season had to be called off temporarily due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Despite the defensive improvements under his watch, Arteta is still expected to strengthen his team with a centre back signing at least ahead of next season.

Here are the best three centre back signings for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal potentially:

1. Dayot Upamecano – The young French player is on the payroll of German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and he’s said to be attracting the interest of both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

2. Nathan Ake – The Bournemouth star is widely regarded as one of the best centre backs outside the Premier League top six teams. Chelsea are in the mix to sign him this summer.

3. Jonathan Tah – Bayer Leverkusen and German defender is a top target for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal this summer.

Report: Arsenal Reject Opening Offer For Midfielder

Lucas Torreira

North London giants Arsenal have rejected the opening offer from Spanish La Liga giants Atletico Madrid for one of their midfielders.

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is attracting serious interest from Diego Simeone with the Atletico Madrid boss said to be a fan of the petite Uruguayan international.

Italian journalist Matteo Pedrosi said that the Gunners turned down the opening offer of a loan deal from Atletico Madrid for Lucas Torreira.

Atletico Madrid wanted to sign the Gunners midfielder on loan with an option to sign him on a permanent deal.

The Spaniards are cash strapped at the moment and they need to release some of their players to fund the signing of new players like Lucas Torreira.

Arsenal are interested in Thomas Partey from the Atletico Madrid squad thus making the potential deals for Torreira and Partey almost straightforward.

Lucas Torreira signed for the Gunners in 2018 following the £26m transfer from Sampdoria in the Italian top flight.

Arteta has preferred midfielders like Granit Xhaka, Mohamed ElNeny, Joe Willock and Dani Ceballos ahead of Torreira.

The Uruguayan international was left out of the Arsenal squad for the opening league game at Fulham which ended in a 3-0 away win for the Gunners.

He was also conspicuously absent for the second league game of the season, a 2-1 win at home to West Ham United.

Calum Chambers

Newcastle are reportedly set to return to Arsenal for the signature of Calum Chambers who is out of favour at the club and is expected to leave for the right offer in this transfer window.

This will be the second return for the Magpies after they earlier made a loan move for Rob Holding but was rejected by the North London club. Manager Mikel Arteta has been able to convince the English defender to remain at the club and fight for his place.

Newcastle are now hoping to convince Arsenal for the signature of Calum Chambers after Rob Holding disappointment and that seems possible with the Gunners also willing to let him go.

However, Newcastle must be willing to spend as their loan bid might not be accepted by Arsenal as a result of the need to let him leave on a permanent deal for £12 million.

It is understood that the North London outfit will not buy the idea of a loan deal and will only be opened for talks with any club that is ready for a permanent deal.

The North London club can boast of more centre-back in the team with the addition of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

English Premier League club Arsenal are reported to be in a transfer battle with a host of clubs for the signature of French Ligue 1 outfit Rennes striker Georginio Rutter in this summer transfer window.

Georginio Rutter is one of the most exciting young players in the French Ligue 1 to have been attracting interest from across Europe. The likes of Newcastle United, RB Leipzig, Lyon, and AC Milan are all lined up for his signature.

The battle for the signature of Georginio Rutter became intense after the clubs learned that he has rejected a new deal with Rennes and will be set to leave the club any moment from now.

It is also understood that the French side are unwilling to let him go for nothing less than his 10 million pounds valuation which most of his suitors are willing to pay.

Apparently, Georginio Rutter is not a priority for the North London club but no doubt that he will add to the options and bring in the competition in the team after Arsenal scouts gave a pleasing report of him.

His current contract with Rennes ends in June 2021 which makes it important for him to be sold this summer window or risk losing him for free.

Alexandre Lacazette

It has been confirmed that the future of French striker Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal is far being settled following claims by manager Mile Arteta that the club is yet to open start contract talks with him.

This summer transfer window has seen the future of the former Lyon striker being debated with suggestions that he would be leaving as a result of the limited starting role he had last season.

Some reports immediately linked him with a move Italian Serie A outfit Juventus while others claim he is being wanted at the Spanish La Liga club Atletico Madrid.

Alexandre Lacazette has come out to dismissal of the reports, insisting that he is happy at the Emirates Stadium and will continue to respect the decision of the Spanish manager.

However, Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports that the French Man who scored his 50th goal for Arsenal in Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Ham United is currently not in negotiation for a new deal with the club.

The North London manager, therefore, noted that he is happy with the player but there cannot be any speculation over his future as the focus for the club is to make more additions in this summer window.

Brentford hand David Raya condition to Arsenal

English Premier League club Arsenal have been told by Brentford that they can only have their goalkeeper target, David Raya, if they will agree to loan him back for the rest of the season.

The Telegraph reports that the Bees rejected a £10m bid from Arsenal for the Spanish goalkeeper who made 49 appearances last season.

It is understood that the 25-year-old is well known to Arsenal’s goalkeeper coach Inaki Cana because the tutor was with Brentford before moving to Arsenal in December last year.

David Raya is needed at Arsenal with the exit of Argentina shot-stopper Emi Martinez who has left the club to join Aston Villa after a brilliant performance that helped him deliver the FA Cup and the Community Shield. No doubt he left when the ovation was high.

Bernd Leno is now left as the only viable option as a goalkeeper at the Emirates Stadium under manager Mikel Arteta.

With Arsenal looking to sign more players before the end of the summer transfer window, there is no doubt a new goalkeeper will be brought in.

It is understood that the Gunners are close to sealing a deal for Dijon goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson as he has passed the first stage of medicals.

Houssem Aouar

Arsenal have been told by Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas that they have the opportunity to sign their top target Houssem Aouar but that will not happen until they are willing to meet his £44 million valuation.

The North London outfit are confirmed to have indicated an interest in the French Ligue 1 star but they are yet to agree on a deal as negotiations are still ongoing. Manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that the club is still in the market to add more players to the team.

When asked if Houssem Aouar would join the north London side, Jean-Michel Aulas reportedly said No because the Premier League side had not submitted an offer yet.

Now it is claimed that talks have been opened between the two clubs over a deal as the 22-year-old is understood to be keen on a move to Arsenal.

Arsenal will have to wait till the last minutes to stand the chance of having their £36m bid to be accepted.

Houssem Aouar is an important part of the Lyon team that reached the Champions League semi-finals by defeating Italian Serie A champions Juventus in the last-16 and Manchester City in the quarter-finals.

Should he join Arsenal, he will be an automatic replacement to Mesut Ozil who is still around but has been frozen out of the team.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo has approved a move for Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain according to the Daily Mirror.

It was disclosed that Wolves are already in talks with Liverpool over the England international after Nuno Espirito Santo gave his approval.

Ex-Arsenal player Chamberlain has moved down the pecking order in the Liverpool midfield with the signing of Thiago Alcantara from German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Thiago Alcantara was a major component of the Bayern Munich midfield as the Bavarian giants won an impressive treble.

Liverpool have paid an initial fee of £20m for the Spanish international. The Reds could pay £7m more in add-ons.

With addition of Thiago Alcantara, Chamberlain will have to fight for three midfield spots only with seven others.

Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all vying for the three midfield spots at Liverpool this season.

With this stiff competition in mind, Chamberlain could move to Wolves after just two-and-a-half season at Anfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Liverpool from Arsenal in a £25m transfer with add-ons taking the deal to the £40m.

Wolves have already done two businesses with Liverpool this summer in the shape of Diogo Jota and Ki-Jana Hoever. Chamberlain could be their third business together.

Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac has been informed that he could leave the club before the transfer market closes next summer.

According to TeamTalk, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told Sead Kolasinac that he can look for a new club following the emergence of Kieran Tierney.

Scottish international Kieran Tierney is the first choice left-back at Arsenal ahead of Sead Kolasinac.

Tierney suffered several injury problems at the start of his Arsenal career which started at the beginning of last season following the £25m transfer from Scottish champions Celtic.

He was able to return to full fitness in time to play his part in the FA Cup title win of last season.

With Tierney established as the first choice Arsenal left-back, Mikel Arteta has given Sead Kolasinac the go ahead to leave in search of regular playing time.

Sead Kolasinac joined Arsenal from German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 on a free transfer.

The Bosnian left-back signed for the Gunners in 2017.

Kolasinac has been attracting interest from clubs in England, Italy and Germany with the Gunners ready to do a deal for just €10m (£9m).

German clubs Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 are in the running alongside Italian Serie A capital club AS Roma and English side West Ham United.
