Arsenal fans might need to wait till after this January transfer window to get their wish for a new central defender according to the publication from the stables of popular media outlet dedicated to London clubs mainly (Football London).

It was disclosed that highly rated RB Leipzig player Dayot Upamecano is the Gunners’ first choice in their bid to sign a quality centre back for new manager Mikel Arteta who has spearheaded a remarkable improvement at Arsenal since taking over one month ago.

Dayot Upamecano is a key player for RB Leipzig.

He has played a major role in the rise to the top of the Bundesliga league.

The Guinea Bissau-born French defender is yet to make a senior appearance for the senior national team though he has played for the junior teams.

Arsenal made a £40m bid for him last summer and it was rejected by RB Leipzig who wanted more for him.

The Germans wanted around £70m for the French defender last summer.

He has 18 months left on his RB Leipzig contract and the Gunners are hopeful that they could sign him for £45m later this year.

Bayern Munich player Jerome Boateng is also a target.
