Arsenal are in the market for centre backs in the January transfer window which starts on Wednesday according to the report from popular media outlet Metro.

It was revealed that the Arsenal owners are ready to back new manager Mikel Arteta in the transfer window after the Spaniard requested for two centre back signings.

Arsenal want to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano who is widely regarded as one of the best young centre backs in European football at the age of 21.

The Gunners were keen to sign him in the summer but his £80m asking price from his German Bundesliga club proved to be a step too far for the North Londoners.

He had two years left on his RB Leipzig at that point and that has reduced to just 18 months.

Arsenal officials are hopeful of signing him for £40m next month though it remains to be seen whether RB Leipzig will sanction the transfer with the club in the middle of achieving something big this season.

RB Leipzig are the pacesetters in the German Bundesliga under young manager Julian Nagelsmann as at the halfway stage of the season and are also in the Champions League knockout stage where they face North London club Tottenham Hotspur.
