Man United sets sight on De Gea’s replacement

After finishing sixth in the English premier league the just concluded season, a rejuvenation is what Manchester United need and the board at the echelon are ready to do that as they have set their target on Mike Maignan to add to the teams rank.

According to a report from the Metro, the former English champions have already begun negotiations to sign the safe hands from Lille as an alternative if their pursuit of £53m-rated Barcelona stopper Jasper Cillessen is fruitless.

The coach of the team, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be very busy during this transfer window as he is set to revamp a squad that finished sixth in the Premier League this season, and if all indications are correct the goalkeeping position needs a replacement in case the current first choice decides to switch allegiance.

With just one year left on his contract, David De Gea who has been one of Man Utd’s key players over the past five years has so far refused to sign an extension amid speculation that he could head to Spain or France.

With the uncertainty over the Spaniard’s long term future, a potential replacement is on the cards for the club and Barcelona have made it clear that they want the full value of the £53m release clause of Cillessen.

With United not prepared to pay that kind of money for the goalie, the Metro believes that the Manchester giants have now turned their attention to Maignan who is worth  £31m which is considerably less than what Barca wants for Cillessen.

The 6ft 1in star was voted as the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 this season and has recently earned his first call-up to the French national team squad ahead of their European Championship qualifiers against Turkey and Andorra this month.
