Experienced journalist Duncan Castles has narrated how Premier League champions Manchester City came close to signing one of the players of City rivals Manchester United.
Duncan Castles talked about Manchester City, Manchester United and transfers on the Transfer Window Podcast via the Daily Express.
According to him, Manchester City missed out on signing Manchester United midfielder Fred last summer after they had passed up the opportunity to sign the Brazilian international star in January 2018.
The Citizens didn’t want to pay his release clause when the player was available for a transfer during last January’s transfer window.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wanted Fred to be the long-term replacement for the ageing Fernandinho.
The English champions tried to sign him again last summer but they were beaten to his signature by rivals Manchester United.
As a matter of fact, Manchester City tried to sign two players in that midfield position last summer but failed.
They attempted to sign Italian international player Jorginho from Napoli only for him to end up at Premier League title rivals Chelsea due to the influence of Maurizio Sarri.
Fred was also targeted but the former Shakhtar Donetsk player ended up in the colours of the Red Devils.
