Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been backed by owners Fenway Sports Group to buy a centre-back in the summer transfer window as the club has been hit with a number of injuries.

Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk who is a major force in the team will not be in action for the rest of the season with a knee injury while Fabinho and Joel Matip are both struggling to be fit.

The Red, therefore, stand the risk of missing out on their target of defending the title if they cannot get a good defence and that is why the German boss has been backed by the owners to secure a cover that can also pair with Virgil Van Dijk when he returns.

It is therefore claimed that Jurgen Klopp has drawn a five-man list of centre0back shortlist ahead of the January transfer window but that will happen when it makes financial sense for the club.

So far, Brighton’s Ben White and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak top the list of players that are wanted by the Merseyside outfit. RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano is believed to be on the list as he is also linked with a move to Anfield.

Italian Serie A outfit Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly is also a target for the Reds team but the Naples team are unwilling to sell at a compromised fee and will rather he remain at with the club.
The target for Liverpool is to have a long-term player who can play for more years and on a top-level with Virgil Van Dijk now 29 years with no age on his side.

His great form can also not be ascertained when he returns as he could take time for him to get back to his best. This is highly considered by the Reds team in their choice come January.
