English Premier League title holders Liverpool have been given a strong message to secure the signing of a quality defender in the coming January transfer window.

The Reds team have suffered a major setback in their bid to defend the English Premier League title with the injury of Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk, who is no doubt one of the most important players in the team.

Virgil Van Dijk suffered a major knee injury in Liverpool’s Merseyside derby against Everton and will be out for the long term, the reason why Paul Merson thinks it would be wise for manager Jurgen Klopp to secure a new high-quality defender as a cover for the former Southampton defender.

Paul Merson sent his words to the Merseyside outfit through his column for the Daily Star by stressing that in addition to the fact that Liverpool players need to get together like never before, the club must also buy in the January window.

The former Arsenal man noted in his column that the Jurgen Klopp’s team would be talked down as a one-man team if they begin to lose games because of the absence of Virgil Van Dijk.

Paul Merson was clear about the fact that Virgil Van Dijk is the best defender but for Liverpool to be the best team in the world, they must win without one player.

However, he noted that the Reds team can boast of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip but these players are not in the same class as the former Southampton player, hence, there is a need to get a defender that can serve as a cover as well as play alongside Virgil Van Dijk when he returns.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have continued to be a strong team, even without Virgil Van Dijk. They secured a 2-1 win against Sheffield on Saturday night.
