Arsenal defender William Saliba failed to secure a loan back to French Ligue 1 side Saint Etienne on the final day of the transfer window as time ran out for both teams to wrap up the deal.
His failure to sign for Saint Etienne has thrown his short-term future into serious doubt.
William Saliba signed for Arsenal last summer after a £27m deal was agreed with Saint Etienne before he was then loaned back to the same club for the entire duration of last season.
Saliba returned to Arsenal this summer but he has struggled mainly due to a bereavement.

The 19-year-old has been psychologically down due to the premature death of his mother and club officials believed that a move back to a familiar surrounding will go a long way to help him back on his feet.
William Saliba is yet to make any competitive debut for Arsenal since returning this summer.
The latest reports claimed that he’s set to stay in English football and may need to drop down to the second tier to have a better opportunity of regular first team football.
