Manchester United were interested in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin before they were quoted the transfer fee for the player.
According to the report via The Sun, the Red Devils were stunned by the £80m valuation of the striker by the Merseysiders.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a breakthrough season in the Premier League last term and that caught the attention of Manchester United.
The 23-year-old scored 13 goals in 36 appearances in the Premier League last season plus one assist in those matches.

In total, the England striker netted 15 times and provided one assist in 40 games.
Calvert-Lewin has continued from where he stopped last season with four goals in the first two Premier League games of the new season.
He netted a hattrick in his last league game, a 5-2 home win for the Toffees over newly promoted team West Bromwich Albion.
Manchester United have prioritised the signing of an attacker in the current transfer market but that has not been possible till date.
Their top attacking priority is Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho but they have been snubbed by the club bosses at the German Bundesliga side.
Manchester United need around £110m to have any chance of signing Jadon Sancho.
The Red Devils have been frustrated in the transfer window till date and they have less than two weeks to make things right.
