Arsenal have made the decision to drop goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from their Premier League opener this season amidst the on-going transfer rumours linking him with clubs in England and Spain.

The Guardian confirmed the news as it was disclosed that the Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta has opted to leave out Martinez from his squad for the trip to newly promoted team Fulham in what’s the opening game of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Emiliano Martinez wanted assurances from Mikel Arteta to be the Gunners first choice shot stopper ahead of Bernd Leno but the Spanish tactician was unable to give him what he wanted.

The Argentine goalkeeper turned down a new contract from Arsenal and with two years left on his existing deal, the club has decided to cash in on him with Premier League side Aston Villa interested.

In the last few days, another English top flight club said to be Brighton and Hove Albion has joined the race to sign him in addition to Spanish La Liga club Real Betis.

Bernd Leno was the undisputed first choice goalkeeper at Arsenal before his injury led to Emiliano Martinez taking his place. Martinez played the final 11 games of last season and impressed a great deal.

He was also in goal for the Community Shield win over Liverpool at the start of this campaign despite the fact that Leno was fit.
