North London giants Arsenal have been plagued issues defensively for the better part of the last one decade dating back to the latter years of the Arsene Wenger era at the club.

Football fans, pundits and stakeholders have always identified the defence as the Achilles heel of the Gunners over the years but the club has not been able to address this problem spanning over 10 years.

Arsenal fans would be hopeful that new manager Mikel Arteta will be the man to mastermind the end to the long-term defensive frailties associated with the club.

Arsenal have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League top half this season and that prompted them to go into the winter break with a negative goal difference (-2).

The Gunners have conceded 34 goals already after 25 league games. In addition, they kept only their third clean sheet of the season away from home this weekend with the goalless draw at Burnley.

Arsenal have kept five clean sheets in the Premier League this term and two of those shutouts have come in the seven games under Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has already made moves to sort out the Arsenal even more following the loan signings of Spanish centre back Pablo Mari and Portuguese right-back Cedric Soares last month.

He’s expected to strengthen the defence more this summer and here are four centre backs that Arteta and Arsenal Could sign.

1. Dayot Upamecano

The RB Leipzig centre back is a long-term defensive target for the Gunners. He came close to joining Arsenal last summer but the Premier League giants were unable to agree on a deal for him.

2. Nathan Ake

The Dutch international is the best centre back at Premier League side Bournemouth by a mile. He was available for just £40m via his release clause that ended last month.

3. Diego Carlos

The Sevilla centre back has been in fine form for the Spanish club in his first season in La Liga upon his arrival from Nantes in France last summer. He is also a major target for Premier League leaders Liverpool.

4. Lewis Dunk

The Brighton skipper is attracting interest from Chelsea who wanted to sign the 28-year-old England player last month.
