Six-time European champions Liverpool have loaned defender Nathaniel Phillips back to German club VfB Stuttgart 17 days after he was recalled last month.

Nathaniel Phillips joined VfB Stuttgart in the German Bundesliga II last summer and he made 11 appearances of the club before Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp made the decision to recall him from his loan spell in Germany due to injuries to some of his defenders.

The young Liverpool center-back returned to Merseyside after his recall on December 27 as a result of the injuries to the likes of Fabinho, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

The three Liverpool players are nearing full fitness and that has prompted Klopp to send Nathaniel Phillips back to VfB Stuttgart on loan till this summer.

He played just one game for Liverpool and that was in the FA Cup.

Nathaniel Phillips played the 90 minutes as a youthful Liverpool side beat Merseyside rivals Everton 1-0 at home in the third round of the FA Cup.

His target at VfB Stuttgart would be to help the German to the top flight after just one season.

VfB Stuttgart are in third position on the league table in their first season back from the top flight of German football having suffered relegation in the last campaign.
