Manchester United might need to sign some players in the current January transfer market especially in midfield to prevent their season going to waste.

The Red Devils are short in midfield after the injuries to both Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

The two players are certain for the starting XI if they are fit and their injuries have condemned Manchester United to the option of just two central midfielders though Andreas Pereira can do a job there.

Fred and Nemanja Matic are the only fit senior central midfielders in the Manchester United squad.

Frenchman Paul Pogba is not expected back until the end of January after minor ankle surgery, while Scott McTominay is expected to take longer before returning to the team.

Manchester United are paying the price for not replacing Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini when the two midfielders left the club last year.

They have been linked with a lot of midfielders in the last few months including Juventus player Emre Can, AS Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo and key Leicester City star James Maddison.

According to SkyBet, Emre Can is favorite to join Manchester United at odds of 3/1 ahead of Borussia Dortmund (7/2).

James Maddison is second favourite at 4/1 ahead of Chelsea (10/1), while Nicolo Zaniolo is third favourite at 5/1 ahead of Tottenham Hotspur (6/1).
