The Arsenal defence is the main priority for new manager Mikel Arteta who was recently appointed as the Gunners boss.

Arsenal have struggled defensively all season and it makes a lot of sense for Arteta to fix it. To this effect, Arteta and Arsenal have contacted Bayern Munich about signing Jerome Boateng who has played in the Premier League previously.

Jerome Boateng played for English champions Manchester City before the Bavarian giants signed him.

He is not in the future plans of Bayern Munich who are open to his sale as revealed by FootMercato.

Arsenal have to contend with an unnamed Italian side for the right to sign Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich as per the report from the aforementioned media outlet.

Bayern Munich want €16m to €18m for the player who has 18 months remaining on his contract at the moment.

His contract at the Allianz Arena will expire next summer.

The German international has featured in 15 games for Bayern Munich this season.

Jerome Boateng partnered with Mats Hummels at the centre of the defence as Germany won the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament held in Brazil.

He has been left out of the Bayern Munich team on many occasions this season.
