Manchester United were without an experienced striker before the start of the campaign following Romelu Lukaku and Sanchez’s summer switch to Serie A side Inter Milan.

It was surprising that Solskjaer didn’t sign capable replacements for both players before the close of the transfer window but media outlet, The Athletic, has revealed the reason for his poor performance during the summer transaction period.

According to the media, United were targeting Antoine Griezmann as Lukaku’s replacement and they have met with the Frenchman’s representative for negotiations.

Unfortunately, the Red Devils were stunned when it was revealed that the Camp Nou outfits had reached a huge £105m deal with Atletico Madrid for the player’s services.

The Red Devils made a last-minute move to block the World Cup winner from joining Barcelona but it appeared too late to cause any major upset.

Martial, Rashford and academy graduate Greenwood have all been given the nod by Solskjaer to lead the attack this season but none has lived up to to expectations.

Martial has been battling with injuries for six weeks, but he’s set to return to action against Liverpool on Sunday, while Rashford could likely remain in Solskjaer’s starting XI against the Reds.
