Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole has announced his retirement from football.

The announcement was made earlier on Sunday.

Ashley Cole also revealed his plans for his career moving forward.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea player was at Derby County until this summer having joined the English Championship club on a short-term deal during the winter transfer window in January.

Ashley Cole was released by Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit LA Galaxy towards the end of last year before he signed a six-month contract at Derby County.

His move to Derby County was influenced by former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard who was the manager at that time.

Lampard has since left Derby County to return to Chelsea.

The former Derby County boss is now the new Chelsea manager after Maurizio Sarri left the club for Juventus this summer.

Italian tactician spent just one season as the Chelsea manager.

Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard were part of the Chelsea squad that won the 2012 Champions League title at the expense of Bayern Munich.

Cole played under Lampard for Derby County as they reached the Championship playoff final before they were beaten by Aston Villa who are now in the Premier League as a result of the win (a 2-1 victory over Derby County).
