Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is reportedly in talks with one of the biggest clubs in Japan over a transfer this summer.

According to Sky Sports, Vermaelen is in advanced talks with Japanese club Vissel Kobe over a free transfer move.

The former Arsenal captain is expected to put pen to paper on a two-year deal until the end of the 2020/21 season.

Thomas Vermaelen is a free agent at the moment but that could change this summer if he signs for Vissel Kobe FC of Japan.

He became a free agent this summer on the back of his contract coming to an end at Barcelona.

Vermaelen is a utility player as he can play well either as a centre back or as a left-back.

He was on the fringes of the Barcelona team before his exit though the Belgian defender suffered a lot of injury problems during his time at the club.

Thomas Vermaelen was part of the Barcelona squad that retained their league title at the end of the last Spanish La Liga club.

If he completes his move to Japanese top flight side Vissel Kobe, Thomas Vermaelen will link up with Barcelona legend Andreas Iniesta.

Vermaelen and Iniesta played together at Barcelona.
