This is according to the Daily Star which revealed that AS Roma want to sign England international centre back Chris Smalling on a permanent transfer.

Manchester United are set to listen to offer from Roma over Chris Smalling’s services after their initial refusal to let go of the player on a permanent deal.

Smalling is in fine form for the Serie A side and the club are reportedly set to launch a permanent bid for his signature in the next transaction period.

It was earlier revealed that the Red Devils are unlikely to release him, but last week’s report via the Sun claimed that the Old Trafford outfits have placed a £17m price tag on his services.

Meanwhile, the latest report from the Daily Mail suggested that AC Milan and Inter Milan are keeping close tabs on the player’s situation as they are impressed with his performances so far this season.

The two San Siro outfits are said to be interested in the 29-year-old and they are more than willing to beat Roma in the race for his signature in the summer.

Though United are struggling for form at the back of the pitch, the decision to let go of the England international seems the best one as there is a need to offload some ineffective players in the team.

Marcos Rojo could equally be on his way out of the Theatre of Dreams before next season having failed to nail down a permanent spot in the team since the start of Solskjaer’s reign.

Chris Smalling

There have been reports that Roma are in talks with United over their chances of signing Chris Smalling on a permanent deal after his fine start to his loan spell at the club.

The England international joined the Serie A side on a loan deal prior to the start of the campaign and he has been doing fine for the team.

Unfortunately, Roma’s mission seems impossible as Sky Sports claimed that the Red Devils have turned down their bid because Solskjaer is keen on having the defender by the end of the season.

The highly regarded media outlet claimed that Solskjaer will happily welcome the centre-back back to his team at the end of the season, should he maintain his fine form through to the end of the campaign.

Chris Smalling’s experience could be one of the reasons why Solskjaer is willing to reunite with the player considering the fact that he is one of the longest-serving players at Old Trafford.

Nonetheless, the decision to retain the tall defender seems unnecessary considering the large pool of players available for selection.

Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe, Marco Rojo, Eric Bailly – if fully fit – and Phil Jones are very much available, hence, retaining the Englishman isn’t needed.
