Newly promoted Premier League team Aston Villa have completed the signing of Matt Targett from Southampton for an undisclosed fee.

The transfer was announced earlier on Monday via the official handle of Aston Villa.

The deal for Matt Targett is said to be worth around £14m including add-ons.

Matt Targett was previously linked with a move to Liverpool as a backup to first choice left-back Andy Robertson.

The 23-year-old was a target for the Reds who are in the market for a replacement for Alberto Moreno who left Liverpool this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

Alberto Moreno has since signed for Spanish La Liga club Villarreal on a free transfer.

Liverpool have missed out on Matt Targett who was not the first choice at Southampton.

Despite playing 16 times for Southampton in the Premier League, Matt Targett has made the decision to leave the club for regular playing time at Aston Villa.

During those league games, Matt Targett scored one goal and also added three assists while playing for the Saints.

In total, the Liverpool target made 21 appearances for Southampton in all competitions last season.

Matt Targett will fight with Neil Taylor for the number one left-back spot at Villa Park.
