Former Juventus manager Marcelo Lippi is adamant that Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs De Ligt is better than Italian football legends Fabio Cannavaro and Paolo Maldini at his age.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup winning manager made this known during an interview with Italian news outlet Tuttosport.
According to him, he has never seen a defender with the ability possessed by the highly rated De Ligt.
The Italian tactician was full of praise for the young Dutch international centre back who has been turning heads on the European football scene.
He’s expected to leave Ajax Amsterdam this summer with several clubs on his trail including Italian Serie A Champions Juventus and Champions League holders Liverpool.
The Italians are seen as the favourites to sign De Ligt if recent reports are to be believed.
The player has agreed to join Juventus this summer but the Old Lady still have to agree on a fee with Ajax Amsterdam as revealed by recent reports.
According to Sky Sports, Ajax Amsterdam are holding out for a bid of €75m to sanction the sale of their skipper.
Matthijs De Ligt led Ajax Amsterdam to two major trophies as well as the Champions League semifinals.
The 19-year-old scored seven goals and also added five assists for the Dutch Eredivisie giants in all competitions last season.
