Newly promoted Premier League club Aston Villa are close to signing Southampton left-back Matt Targett this summer.

This is according to the publication from Southern Daily Echo which revealed that Aston Villa have agreed a £16m for Matt Targett ahead of his transfer to Villa Park.

The 23-year-old is expected to sign for Aston Villa next week after he has done his medical.

Aston Villa wanted to pay £8m for the young Southampton left-back but they ended up paying the amount in two folds.

Matt Targett was previously linked with a move to European champions Liverpool who are looking for a backup left-back for first choice Andy Robertson.

The Reds need a new left-back after the exit of Spanish international Alberto Moreno who ended his five-year stay at Liverpool this summer.

Alberto Moreno signed for Liverpool from Spanish La Liga club Sevilla in 2014.

The 26-year-old has since joined Spanish outfit Villarreal on a free transfer.

Liverpool will have to look at another option in their quest to find a replacement for Moreno after the new development concerning Matt Targett.

The Southampton left-back is expected to rival Neil Taylor for a place in the starting XI next season.

Matt Targett scored one goal and added three assists in just 13 starts and three substitute appearances for the Saints in the Premier League last season.
