Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs De Ligt showed why several European sides like Arsenal are after his signature after he led the Dutch Eredivisie giants to a memorable win at Real Madrid.

It was the second leg of their Champions League last 16th tie with Ajax running out 4-1 winners to comfortably overturn the first leg deficit from the first leg meeting between the two sides at the Amsterdam Arena in February.

Real Madrid won 2-1 in the first leg in a controversial manner after VAR Technology harshly ruled out the opening goal from Ajax playmaker Dusan Tadic.

The Spaniards went on to score two goals with Moroccan international Hakim Ziyech getting the lone striker for Ajax Amsterdam in between the Real Madrid goals.

Ziyech scored again to give Ajax hope of securing a last eight berth as he scored the opening goal of the game.

His goal came shortly after Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane missed a great chance to score the first goal of the night after his header cannoned off the crossbar.

David Neres added a second goal for Ajax in the 18th minute before Tadic scored the third goal.

Substitute Marcos Asensio pulled one back for the hosts before Lasse Schone scored a fine free-kick for a 4-1 away win over defending champions Real Madrid and a 5-3 aggregate win.

Arsenal target De Ligt formed a lethal centre back partnership with former Manchester United player Daley Blind to give his side victory.
