North London giants Arsenal were keen on a move for Paris Saint Germain (PSG) midfielder Christopher Nkunku during the January transfer window but the Gunners were unable to complete a deal for the young French player.

French media outlet L’Equipe confirmed the Gunners’ interest in the 21-year-old as it was revealed that the player also wanted to leave PSG last month.

In the end, Arsenal were unable to sign him after failing to meet up with the asking price from PSG.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery wanted to reunite with his former player but a lack of finance proved to be the barrier between the Gunners and signing their transfer target.

Unai Emery spent two years as the PSG manager between 2016 and 2018.

The Spaniard handed Christopher Nkunku his PSG debut last season as PSG clinched the French Ligue 1 title.

Unai Emery had earlier confirmed in the first week of January that Arsenal can only bring players on loan and it expectedly drew angst from the club’s supporters.

Arsenal were unable to pay the loan fee for Christopher Nkunku having already done same for Barcelona loanee Denis Suarez.

Spanish midfielder Suarez joined the Gunners on loan for the rest of the season with the option to sign him permanently this summer.
