North London giants Arsenal have identified the left-back position as an area of concern that needs strengthening ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
In a bid to address the situation, the Gunners are plotting a move for highly rated Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo also known as (a.k.a) Alex Grimaldo according to the report from Portuguese media outlet Corriere da Cunha.
The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Barcelona via the famed La Masia Academy before deciding to swap Spain for Portuguese club Benfica.
He has a £52.5m release clause in his current deal with the former Portuguese champions meaning that an Arsenal transfer would be unlikely as a result of the financial strength required to pull off a deal for the Spaniard.
Arsenal were restricted to loan signings during the January transfer window and that is set to continue into the summer with recent reports claiming that the Gunners have just £45m to spend when the transfer reopens in few months time.
The said transfer fee will exclude monies raised from player sales.
Arsenal have had issues at left-back this season with first choice Nacho Montreal already entering the twilight of his career while his backup Sead Kolasinac is more adept as a left winger or at left wing-back rather than at left-back.
