Three-time Premier League champions Arsenal are said to be monitoring the situation of Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo at his club ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
Spanish defender Grimaldo has been earning rave reviews for his performances in the colours of his Portuguese Super League club this season.
The 23-year-old has grown to become an important player for Benfica since his €1.5m move from Spanish La Liga champions Barcelona in January 2016.
Benfica were able to sign the left-back for a small transfer fee due to the fact that his Barcelona contract was running down although the Catalan giants have the right to a certain percentage of the future sale of the player.
Since his move to Benfica, Alejandro Grimaldo has scored six goals in 63 appearances for the club in the league.
Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo revealed that the player has been attracting the interest of La Liga club Atletico Madrid apart from North London giants Arsenal.
Grimaldo could be a potential replacement for compatriot Nacho Monreal at Arsenal with the former Malaga and Osasuna player already in the twilight of his football career.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has identified the left-back position as a key area to strengthen and fellow Spaniard Alejandro Grimaldo could be the man for the job.
