Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has put pen to paper on a contract extension at Old Trafford thereby putting a loan transfer to Scottish Premiership side Celtic in serious doubt.

It was announced on Monday that the young midfielder has signed a new contract until the end of the 2022/23 season with the option of an extra year until 2024.

He had earlier been linked with a loan move to Scottish champions Celtic despite the fact that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that the young midfielder will stay at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.

Scottish international McTominay has been linked with a loan transfer away from the club following his inability to feature for the Manchester United team consistently.

He has played just eight times for the Red Devils this term including two appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ex-Norwegian international striker Solskjaer was appointed the interim Manchester United manager for the rest of the season following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Scott McTominay has found it hard to break into the first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 22-year-old has played in two of the seven games under Solskjaer who has settled for the midfield trio of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic.
