Arsenal have opened talks with Italian Serie A giants Juventus over the potential transfer of quality centre-back Mehdi Benatia.
This was revealed by Italian media outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport who revealed that the Gunners have made an enquiry for the Moroccan international defender.
Arsenal are said to be in the transfer market for a new centre-back to boost the North Londoners’ defensive solidity for the second half of the season.
Mehdi Benatia could be available for a transfer in this window with the Moroccan centre-back no longer a member of the starting XI.
The 31-year-old has been relegated to the bench since the summer return of defender Leonardo Bonucci to the Juventus Stadium.
Benatia was signed as a replacement for Bonucci who left Juventus for rivals AC Milan in the summer of 2017 only for the Italian international defender to return to the club at the start of this season.
Arsenal manager Unai Emery is keen to add to the defensive options in his team and Mehdi Benatia could be that man.
The Gunners have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League with 31 goals conceded in 21 games this season in addition to just three clean sheets since the league started in August.
