North London giants Arsenal will have to contend with the threat posed by fellow Premier League side Newcastle United in their quest to sign Ajax Amsterdam defender Nicolas Tagliafico when the transfer window reopens in two days.

The Gunners must fend off the Magpies for Argentine international left-back Tagliafico who has just 18 months remaining on his contract with Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax.

The Newcastle United threat was reported by the Daily Express.

Nicolas Tagliafico was recently part of the Argentina team that didn’t impress at all during this summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.

Tagliafico and Argentina managed to qualify for the first knockout stage of the competition with a slim 2-1 victory over the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their last game in Group D before they were eliminated by eventual champions France.

The French team won their last 16 clashes 4-3 to eliminate the two-time world champions.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has identified Tagliafico as a potential addition to his porous defence.

He will be a direct replacement for ageing first choice left-back Nacho Monreal who has suffered from several injuries this season.

The Spaniard missed the start of this season with a hamstring injury before returning to the treatment table as a result of the injury that he sustained in the home Premier League victory over Burnley earlier this month.
