Italian Serie A giants AC Milan have joined Arsenal in the race to sign highly rated Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl ahead of the upcoming transfer window scheduled to begin as from the start of next month.
Italian news platform calciomercato claim that AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso has been given the greenlight to push for a move for the German midfielder.
It was also revealed that the Italians are open to a short-term loan move for the 23-year-old with the option to buy the player outrightly at the end of this season.
They see him as a better alternative to Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas financially.
The report claim that a move for former Arsenal skipper Fabregas will be too expensive for Milan.
The San Siro giants are light in midfield due to long-term injuries to the duo of Lucas Biglia and Giacomo Bonaventura. To this effect, Milan want to improve their midfield options with at least a signing ahead of the second half of the season.
AC Milan have already crashed out of the Europa League and the priority is solely Champions League qualification for next season via the league route.
Apart from Milan, Julian Weigl has previously been touted as a potential signing for the Premier League duo of Arsenal and Manchester City.
