Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira has revealed the reason behind his summer transfer to the club.
The Uruguayan international star joined the North London club from Italian Serie A side Sampdoria in the summer after the World Cup heroics with his country.
Torreira was part of the Uruguay squad that reached the quarterfinals of this summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.
Lucas Torreira and Uruguay crashed out of the tournament via a 2-0 loss to eventual champions France.
Arsenal and Sampdoria agreed on a transfer fee of around £26.5m in three instalments to secure his transfer.
Lucas Torreira became an Arsenal player on July 11 and he has become a key player for the Gunners since then.
What made his mind up as regards signing for Arsenal?, Lucas Torreira told the club’s website that the personal call from manager Unai Emery played a big role in him signing for the Gunners.
The Uruguayan also revealed that he had several interests from Italian top-flight clubs before the call from Arsenal came.
Lucas Torreira started the season out of the starting XI for the first five league games as Unai Emery eased him into the Arsenal team.
He made his first Premier League start in the sixth league game of the season against Everton and has retained his place on the team.
As a matter of fact, Lucas Torreira is one of the first names on the Arsenal starting XI.
