Manchester United are reportedly ready to make a record move for French international defender Raphael Varane ahead of the upcoming transfer window scheduled to start as from January 1.
Raphael Varane plays his club football for Champions League holders Real Madrid at the moment.
The 25-year-old was part of the Real Madrid side that won three successive Champions League titles under the guidance of France football legend Zinedine Zidane.
He was also an integral member of the France squad that won a second World Cup title this summer.
Varane and the French team won the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia via a 4-2 victory over surprise finalists Croatia in their final clash in Moscow.
According to the report from London Evening Standard via Daily Star, Manchester United chief executive, Ed Woodward is ready to make Raphael Varane the most expensive defender in the history of world football.
Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk currently holds the record after the Reds paid Southampton £75m to secure his services in January.
Woodward would have to pay more than that transfer fee for Varane who has a Real Madrid contract that does not expire until 2022.
Manchester United are in need of defensive reinforcements after their poor start to the season.
The Red Devils have been able to keep just two clean sheets in 13 Premier League games this term.
