Manchester United have reportedly opened contract talks with defender Chris Smalling with the club keen to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford.
According to the publication from popular English media portal Daily Mail, Manchester United are ready to offer the 29-year-old a 150% increase on his weekly salary with the Red Devils in a bid to keep him away from the claws of fellow Premier League side Everton.
The Merseyside club has been linked with the England international centre back ahead of the upcoming transfer window scheduled to start as from the 1st of January.
His Manchester United contract expires at the end of this season but the Red Devils can activate the clause of an additional year in his current deal thus taking him to the end of the 2019/20 season.
Chris Smalling is on a weekly salary of £80,000 and the club is keen to offer him new contract terms that will see him earn £120,000 on a weekly basis.
He has been a part of the Red Devils’ centre back partnership this season alongside Swedish international star Victor Lindelof.
Smalling has recovered well from the disappointment of missing out on the England squad that finished fourth at this summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.
