Why Arsenal Must Gamble Beyond Their Transfer Budget

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has called on the club to gamble beyond their transfer budget this summer by signing the players needed to bridge the gap between them and the top two teams in the Premier League.

Manchester City and Liverpool were clearly the best two teams in the Premier League last season and former Arsenal midfielder Parlour believes that the Gunners will have to spend money to close the gap on those two teams.

Ray Parlour talked about Arsenal and transfers in a chat with the Daily Star as he cited the example of Liverpool and their transfer dealings last summer.

Liverpool splashed the cash on both Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker last year and both players were instrumental to the success recorded by Liverpool on the pitch last season.

The Reds signed Van Dijk from fellow Premier League club Southampton for a world-record fee of £75m for a defender.

On his part, Alisson Becker moved to Liverpool from Italian Serie A club AS Roma for a then world-record fee for a goalkeeper.

His £67m transfer fee was beaten some days after his move to Liverpool after Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao in a deal believed to be around £71m which was his release clause at the Spanish La Liga outfit.
