It has been revealed that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho had a secret reason for the sale of Dutch international Memphis Depay.
The 24-year-old signed for French Ligue 1 giants Olympique Lyon under Mourinho’s watch in January 2017 after the Red Devils agreed an initial fee of around £16m for his services.
According to the report from popular English news portal Daily Express, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho sanctioned the sale of Depay in the bid to give Armenian international midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan more playing time at Old Trafford.
Mkhitaryan spent one more year with the three-time European champions before he joined North London giants Arsenal in January 2018 in a swap deal involving Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez.
Memphis Depay struggled to make an impact during his 18-month stay at Manchester United but has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in form at Lyon.
He’s in the spotlight after producing a MotM (Man-of-the-Match) performance for the Netherlands in their impressive 3-0 win over Germany at the Johan Cryuff Stadium in Amsterdam on Saturday night.
Depay doubled the Netherlands’ advantage in the 87th minute after Liverpool centre-back Virgil Van Dijk had given the hosts a 30th-minute lead.
Another Reds player Giorginio Wijnaldum added a third goal in added time to wrap up the convincing win.
