Arsenal are reportedly preparing an improved bid for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners had earlier made attempts to prise the 22-year-old Frenchman away from Lyon to no avail.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his midfield for the new season and the duo of Houssem Aouar and Atletico Madrid player Thomas Partey are his top targets.

Lyon sporting director Juninho Pernambucano confirmed the interest of the Gunners in his recent interview as he said that the North Londoners offered young midfielder Matteo Guendouzi in part exchange.

According to Juninho, Matteo Guendouzi doesn’t fit into their profile and that Lyon are not interested in him.

ESPN also stated that Arsenal made a bid of around £31.2m which was rejected by Lyon. The French club is said to be holding out for  £54.5m at least.

Houssem Aouar was a key player for Lyon as he helped the French team reach the last four of the Champions League at the end of the last campaign. His performances for Lyon brought a lot of interest from big clubs on the European stage.

The likes of Juventus, Manchester City and Arsenal paid attention to him. Only the Gunners have made a bid for him.
