Van Der Sar is a board member of the European Club Association (ECA) and Manchester United believe that his expertise and impressive contact list will be useful for the club.
The 48-year-old has been at the center of the renaissance witnessed at Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam in the last one year.
Ajax Amsterdam won two major trophies last season in addition to reaching the Champions League semifinals.
The Dutch Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup title were picked up by Ajax at the end of the last campaign.
Edwin Van Der Sar is expected to get the Manchester United sporting director job ahead of a lot of his former teammates at Old Trafford.
The likes of Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, and Darren Fletcher were all interviewed for the Sporting Director position.
Paul Mitchell and John Murtagh were also in the running.
