New Juventus signing Matthijs De Ligt has revealed why he snubbed a lot of European clubs including Premier League giants Manchester United before signing for Italian champions Juventus.

The Dutch international defender was confirmed as a Juventus player on Thursday morning and he spoke about the motivation behind the move from Ajax Amsterdam to Turin.

According to him, a lot of his football idols are Italians from Pablo Cannavaro, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Alessandro Nesta.

Matthijs De Ligt further revealed that Italian football has a big influence on him.

Juventus paid €75m rising to €85.5m for his transfer to make him the third most expensive transfer in the history of the club behind Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Italian champions spent €90m to sign Higuain from fellow Italian Serie A giants Napoli in the summer of 2016.

The Higuain transfer was the club record before Juventus splashed €100m on Ronaldo from Real Madrid last summer.

Matthijs De Ligt came through the ranks at Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam before making his debut for the first team.

The 19-year-old went on to become the Ajax skipper at the age of 18 last year.

He was part of the Ajax team that won two major trophies last season.
