Italian Serie A champions Juventus have announced the signing of Matthijs De Ligt from Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam.

The transfer was confirmed on Thursday morning.

De Ligt had earlier passed his Juventus medical on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old has signed a five-year deal at Juventus until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Juventus saw off competition from a lot of clubs to sign the player for €75m (£68m) rising to €85.5m (£77m) based on performance-related bonuses.

The Italians saw off stiff competition from major European sides like Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona, French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain (PSG), reigning European champions Liverpool, Manchester United and Premier League champions Manchester City.

Matthijs De Ligt is widely regarded as one of the best young players in world football and he was immense for both club and country last season.

The Dutchman was recently part of the Netherlands squad that lost the UEFA Nations League title to Portugal who won the final 1-0.

De Ligt was a key player for Ajax Amsterdam last season as they stunned European football via the Champions League.

A youthful Ajax Amsterdam side stunned Real Madrid and Juventus as they reached the last four of the competition before they were knocked out by Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.
