Dutch international player Virgil Van Dijk could have been playing for Manchester United instead of Liverpool if the Red Devils had managed to pull off a transfer for him before he went to Merseyside.

According to the publication from The Times, Manchester United tried and failed to sign Virgil Van Dijk just before he signed for Liverpool at the start of last year.

Van Dijk is the most expensive defender in world football in the wake of his transfer to Liverpool during last year’s winter transfer window.

Liverpool paid £75m for the former Celtic player who joined the Reds from fellow Premier League club Southampton.

It was revealed that Manchester United tried to sign him just a day before his transfer was finalised on January 1, 2018 but the Red Devils were informed that the Dutch defender has already completed his medical with arch rivals Liverpool.

Manchester United fans would be ruing what could have been going by his performance in a Liverpool shirt since his transfer last year.

He helped the Reds to the Champions League final last season before they were beaten 3-1 by Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Van Dijk has also been a key player for Liverpool in their run to the Premier League summit this term.
