North London giants Arsenal missed out on a perfect opportunity to boost their top-four hopes after they were beaten by Everton in their Premier League clash on Sunday evening.

The Gunners are in on a keenly contested battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.

As a matter of fact, the North Londoners are in a four-team battle for two top-four spots that will guarantee Champions League football next season.

North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United are also in the running for a top-four spot.

Arsenal started the weekend in fourth position and a win over Everton would have taken the Gunners above Tottenham Hotspur and into third position but they were beaten 1-0 by Everton.

The only goal of the game came in the 10th minute after Everton skipper Phil Jagielka prodded home from close range after Arsenal failed to clear their lines off a long throw from Lucas Digne.

With the defeat, Arsenal are in danger of losing their position in the top four with Chelsea breathing down their neck.

Both teams are on the same point (63) with six games left and the Blues will play the first of those games against London rivals West Ham United on Monday night.

At least a draw for Chelsea will take the Blues above Arsenal and into fourth spot.
