Euro 2020 Qualifiers: Arsenal Defender Sits Out Greece Win

Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos was benched for the entire duration of the game as his Greek side got their Euro 2020 qualifiers to a flying start.

The Gunners centre back watched from the bench as Greece defeated Lichtenstein 2-0 away from home to start their qualifying campaign with a win.

Greece got their win with two goals either side of the halftime interval.

The 2004 European champions broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime through Kostas Fortounis before Anastasios Donis wrapped up the win with ten minutes to go.

The win ensured that Greece move to joint top alongside Italy in Group J of the qualifiers.

The target for Greece is to emulate the class of 2004 when they shocked the world by winning the European Championship via a 1-0 win over Portugal.

Angelo Charisteas was the hero for the Greek team after he scored the only goal of the game.

Greece will hope to maintain their winning run in the qualifiers when they travel to take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in their second game.

Arsenal defender Sokratis was rested for the first game against Lichtenstein and he’s expected to make his return to the Greece starting XI for the Bosnia game on Tuesday night.
