Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo made a welcomed return to international football on Friday night but he could not lead his Portugal side to victory in the first game of their Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Portugal hosted Ukraine in a Group B clash and were unable to find the back of the net against the visitors as both sides settled for a goalless draw.

Former Manchester United player Ronaldo was playing his first game for the Portuguese national team since the last 16 exit at last summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.

Ronaldo and Portugal were dumped out of the tournament in Russia at the first knockout stage by Uruguay.

Edinson Cavani scored two goals to give the Uruguayans a 2-1 win over Portugal in their last 16 clash.

Cristiano Ronaldo made his return against the Ukrainians as he played the whole game but the former Real Madrid talisman was unable to add to his 85 goals for Portugal in what was his 155th cap for the European champions.

In the other game played in Group B, Luxembourg stunned Lithuania 2-1 at home to surprisingly secure top spot in the group after the first set of games.

Serbia is the fifth and final team in the group.
